RF 100-500mm f/4-7.1L IS USM vs EF 100-400 II

Hey guys I’m just waiting for my new lens to come I’m currently using the EF 100-400 II, will I notice a big improvement with this lens? I’m using a Canon R5. has anybody used a teleconverter with this? How well does it work? If I wanted more reach would I be better buying an R7 instead of the teleconverter?

I own this lens and a RF 1.4x TC.  

The lens is very sharp.  100mm is not a great deal of extra reach.  The RF200-800 might have been a better option, but this depends on shooting conditions.  I am in no way trying to diminish your purchase.  The RF 100-500 is one of my favorite  lenses.  I use it much more than my 200-800.

Hubbard Glacier If you want to use a TC, the lens has to be zoomed to 300mm or more before connecting the TC.  You'll lose a stop of light with 1.4x, and 2 if used with the 2.0x.  I would not use it with a 2.0x TC, but that is up to you.

I use the collar / foot as a carry handle 100% of the time except when tripod mounted.  Make sure you have a retention system.  My preferred carry method is a black rapids wrist strap connected to the mount on the bottom of the body and using the foot as a handle.  This way there is no way you will "lose" the camera or lens.    

The R7 is certainly an option.  Since you are using an R5, you might try putting it in crop mode.  While your image resolution will drop to about 17MP, this might be acceptable depending on what you plan to do with your output.
