EOS REBEL SLR Lens recommendations for newborn & child photography

Hi there. I’m in need of a lens that will take great indoor portraits for children main Christmas pictures in my living room with inconsistent lighting. I wanted fhe RD35 mmf1.8 macro STM lens but I realized that won’t fit my camera. Please help! I would really love this to be another outlet to be creative but also make a side income.

EOS Rebel series Digital cameras require EF or EF-S lenses. If you’re using an EOS Rebel series film camera then EF lenses are required. EF-S lenses cannot be mounted on any EOS 35mm AF SLR by design. Or serious damage can result to the camera’s reflex mirror. You probably can’t find new lenses for that mount as it has been discontinued. Though used lenses can be found on various websites. Note if this is a Digital Rebel there will be 1.6x crop factor. When compared to Full Frame Digital or the 35mm film format. The lens will not be as wide as it would be on a Full Frame camera.

What camera and lens would you suggest I invest in?

If you still have the RF 35mm F/1.8 Macro IS STM lens. Then you can look into an RF Mount camera. This lens system is used for EOS R series Mirrorless cameras. What lenses do you currently own please provide full names of the lens. Saying “EF-S 18-55mm” is NOT a complete name. Also what is your budget for a new camera. Also what camera do you currently own too. If it’s a digital Rebel do you want to stay with APS-C or move to Full Frame. APS-C will be a cheaper option when it comes to cameras and lenses compared to Full Frame. When Canon started making APS-C EOS R series cameras they dropped the “EOS Rebel” name. They decided to brand that lineup of cameras 3 digit number model names. This was already being used outside the U.S. so this change only affected U.S. users. Are you going to be using an external flash or just the built in flash? Canon has been converting all of their new flash products to use the new multi function hot shoe. Most newer cameras are backwards compatible with older model speedlites. Except for the EOS R50 & EOS R50V but those cameras are focused more on video than stills.

The above replies are making this way more difficult and confusing than it is or has to be. Any Rebel camera will do what you want. Of course there are certain limitations which all photography people come across. What Rebel model camera do you have not that it matters a lot? You need to buy a relatively fast prime lens. A 35mm f2 perhaps. It would do well for portraits. A somewhat more WA lens say 20mm to 28mm also in the f2 aperture for more full body or group shots. Any of the standard ‘kit’ 18-55mm zooms can work but they suffer from being too slow for low light indoor work. However that does depend on your certain situation and conditions.

A good sturdy tripod could help a great deal. Also getting a good photo editor is mandatory but Canon offers DPP4 for free. Get it, learn it without a good editor you can’t produce pro looking work. Period! Always use raw file format never jpg.

I would certainly try what you have before I went out and spent money no knowing what you want or need. Again the most important part is getting DPP4 or Photoshop (not free).

BTW, the mention of APS-C or crop is not necessary and you need not be concerned about it or with it. It is only a ratio if you want to compare different camera models to one another and I see no good reason to do that.
