EF Lens Recommendations for Light Painting

Klombardi88

Hello everyone!  I am new to photography and have purchased a Canon EOS Rebel T7 for my current digital photography class.  I have been learning about light painting and really want to try my hand at this!  I am unsure of the different types of lenses and what lens would work best for this new project.  I currently have the standard EFS 18-55mm lens that came with the camera.  Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Good for you and welcome to the world of photography! If you're just getting started with photography and testing the waters with light painting, I'd suggest the camera and lens you have will be perfectly fine and will work well for many years. Your T7 kit will work quite well for mastering the essential creative controls (shutter speed, ISO and aperture) along with composition, especially if you pursue photography primarily as a hobby. However, the T7 is based on the Canon "EF" lens system, which has been supplanted by the RF system. To be clear, there are many exceptional lenses based on the (now "legacy") EF system still available new, and on the used market. But if you begin to consider photography as a more serious endeavor, you'll eventually want to upgrade both camera and lens based around the RF system that will grow with you for years to come. For this reason, I'd advise waiting to invest in a new EF lens and instead, begin to plan for a full migration to the RF  platform.
