Advise for new camera: Eos RP, 6dm2 or apsc?

Hello everyone, I'm new here 🙂

I started a few years ago with a 1300D with lens 18-55 and it's time to upgrade.

I have limited budget (1200/1300) but for my purposes I think that it's more than enough. I'm just an amateur that like to take family pictures or bring the camera with me when I have a walk to take picture to animals, flowers and so. And I would like to switch to a full-time (however I don't know if it's worth it for my usage).

RP seems interesting, there is a bundle is canon site with camera, 24-105 STM lens, two batteries, SD, backpack with 1300 bucks. Otherwise it's easy to find used 6D mark ii with 30/40K shots a good price and in case I can purchase a 400/500$ lens.

I'm thinking about RP, i prefer the smaller size and digic 8, battery life it's not a real issue, I don't need a camera for all day usage but usually just for a couple of hours. The only thing that scares me it's the passage from reflex to mirrorless, I don't like to take pictures using the live view but only with viewfinder. Furthermore a lot of people doesn't likes RP, seems worst than 6dm2.

So at this point I don't know if to go with the RP, the used 6dm2 or maybe reconsider to get another apsc like 90d or R10 for my kind of usage. Consider I'd like to keep this camera for next years and start to invest in lens.

Thank you!

Thanks Rick. Good point. I'll stick with OVF.

Rick point is relevant when he states "Canon's later mirror-less cameras can easily outperform the EVF on the RP". As you review the release dates of the R series mirror-less camera's I believe it makes some sense why the EVF wasn't their finest work. Additionally, the R and RP were I believe targeted for a budget concise audience wanting to take their first steps in mirror-less photography.

2018/2019 Canon was just leaping into the serious mirror-less market (not taking into account the M series) and I think most would agree that the technology and engineering has advanced significantly since 2019. From my perspective the bodies that I own, I have no complaints with the performance of the EVF and I use them about 95% of the time.

I believe I have the release dates pretty close to accurate ;o)

  • Canon EOS R: Released in September 2018, this was Canon's first full-frame mirrorless camera.
  • EOS R Ra: A specialized astrophotography version of the EOS R released in 2019.
  • EOS RP: Released in 2019, this was Canon's more affordable full-frame option.
  • EOS R5: Launched in July 2020.
  • EOS R6: Also released in July 2020.
  • EOS R3: Introduced in November 2021.
  • EOS R7 and EOS R10, were released in May 2022.
  • EOS R6 Mark II: Released in late 2022.
  • EOS R50 was released in March 2023
  • EOS R100 in May 2023.
  • EOS R8: Released in 2023.
  • EOS R5 Mark II: Released in July 2024.
  • EOS R1: Also released in July 2024.

Agreed on the newer EVF's. I came mostly straight from film OVF's into the R6M2. I cannot comment on the RP model. But maybe I'm just used to it, but the EVF is an afterthought for me now after less than 2 months, for the most part. It works great, and sometimes I forget that it is what it is, as it works so well. I do also enjoy seeing what changing some settings can do to the image before shooting. We're spoiled these days with technology. Yes some are better than others, as are all things at certain price points.

A1, Elan 7e, R6M2, Lenses....many FD/EF/RF Lenses/Speedlites. All fun!
