Why is the EOS M not being sold in the US?

I am very disappointed that the new M3 is not being sold in the US. I am looking for a compact digital camera with interchangeable lens for street photography, high quality sensor, excellent glass, and the M3 has excellent specifications, comparable to Sony and other competitors. 

My 5D is just to bulky, noticeable and awkward for street shooting. 

Why has Canon skipped the US? What do they suggest I substitute?

The bottom line is the M3 was/is no good.  People quickly found this out and word spread.  Canon wanted to save face and ditched it quickly.  I bet they will be much more careful about releasing another, not ready for prime time camera any time soon.

Have you checked out the P&S models?  The G15 and newer G16 are good little camera with amazing lenses.  They have most of the features that a DSLR has.  Impressive!
