Just sent my 6 month old 5d Mark ii in for repair. The whole experience has left me with a less than "Warm and Fuzzy" feeling. First of all, I have used Canon exclusively for 30 years and never had any issues with any product. From the P&S I keep in my purse, to lenses to bodies, I have never had a single problem, so I NEVER expected my brand new $2k plus body to fail. I never heard one word from Canon that the repairs had been finished, or that my body had even been shipped back to me until I discovered on my own that it was in transit by checking the repair status. I'd expect an email to let me know it's on it's way. I called to see what the issue had been, and was told the PCB assembly had been replaced. No info as to what caused this, if they know at all. I have a bad feeling now about this camera, and imagine I'll be holding my breath until the next issue arises.

I have had a number of Canon products like you and almost all have been reliable. Electronics do fail and usually within the warranty period. I have had problems with both lenses and bodies and Canon has always repaired under warranty and in a timely manner. There descriptions of the repairs are usually terse but the point is the repair is done and has always corrected the problem. As for e-mail notification, I do not think Canon sends out e-mails but the status of the repair is easily checked on-line.

As a technical proffesional I can say that faulty parts will slip through the production line from time to time, and sometimes parts just fail. I've had to rebuild the engine on a car that was 3 days old because the alternator grenaded and threw the serpetine belt under the timing belt. Granted a engine rebuild on a brand new car is pretty drastic, but the guy never had another issue with the car. If the camera comes back and everything is in propper working order, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
