Understanding Camera Error Codes

Description

Learn about error codes that may be displayed on your camera’s LCD when there is an error. This post includes information and next steps for codes Err 01, 02, 04, 05, 06, 10, 20,30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 99.

What you see

When there is an issue with the camera, an error message is displayed on the LCD.

 

Message and Next Steps

Err 01 - Communications between the camera and the lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts on the camera and lens.

  1. Clean the electrical contacts on the camera and lens.
  2. Ensure that the lens is mounted and locked in place.
  3. Remove and re-install the battery.
  4. If the problem persists, contact a Canon Service Center.

Err 02, 04, 10 – Card cannot be accessed. Reinsert/change card or format card with camera.

  1. Remove and reinstall the memory card.
  2. Replace the card.
  3. Format the card in the camera.
    ℹ️ All images and data will be erased during reformatting. Save the data to a computer before reformatting.
  4. If the problem persists, contact a Canon Service Center.

 

Err 04 – Cannot save images because card is full. Replace the card.

  1. Replace the card.
  2. Erase unnecessary images on the card.
  3. Format the card in the camera.
    ℹ️All images and data will be erased during reformatting. Save the data to a computer before reformatting. 
  4. If the problem persists, contact a Canon Service Center.

 

Err 05, 20 - The built-in flash could not be raised.

  1. Turn the camera of and back on.
  2. Check that the flash is enabled on the Mode Dial and in the viewfinder.
  3. Press the shutter button half-way to raise the flash.
  4. If the problem persists, contact a Canon Service Center.

Err 06  - Sensor cleaning could not be performed.

  1. Turn the camera off and back on.
  2. If the problem persists, contact a Canon Service Center.

ℹ️ Turning the sensor cleaning mode off in the menu may allow for continued use until service can be scheduled.

Err 10, 20, 30,40,50,60,70,80 or 99 – An error prevented shooting.

  1. Turn the camera off and back on.
  2. Remove and re-install the battery.
  3. If the problem persists, contact a Canon Service Center.

For 02/04/10, you might mention that you should use a full size card, not a micro card with adapter

That's the same as "replace the card." Also, we are able to use a micro card. I am using one right now. 

Always two there are... a master... and an apprentice...

While you might be having good luck with a mircro card, many, many folks have card issues that are immediately cleared up switching to a full size card. You have a time bomb in your camera. It will work until it doesn't.

Agree with you KV.   The issue is that by using a micro-SD card and an adapter, one is introducing another mechanical interface into the chain of data transfer.  It is not the same as just replacing a card (with another like it) it  is a case of using the correct form of card for the interface.  I say this not just from being an experienced photographer, but an engineer.
