Sudden Blurriness with Canon R6 Mark II and 70–200mm Lens

Hello Canon Community,

I’m looking for advice regarding a sudden issue I’ve started experiencing with my Canon EOS R6 Mark II.

Until recently, I’ve never had any problems with this camera. My images were consistently sharp. I typically shoot moving subjects with a shutter speed between 1/1000 and 1/2000, aperture around f/5.6 for large groups, and ISO kept as low as possible. This setup has always worked well for me.

However, over the past few days I’ve been getting unexpected blur, especially with movement. The issue only seems to happen when I use my zoom lens (70–200mm),I also purchased another 70 to 200 lens thinking that was the issue and the problem is the same. The blurriness becomes more noticeable the more I zoom in. At around 70mm things are usually fine, but at the longer focal lengths the images become much blurrier. I do not experience this issue at all with my prime lens (35mm).

I’ve already checked my autofocus settings and am shooting in Servo AF with continuous eye tracking enabled, but the issue persists.

Canon support believes it may be a camera-related issue and suggested sending it in for repair. Before doing that, I wanted to ask the community:

Has anyone experienced something similar with the R6 Mark II and a 70–200mm lens? If so, what was the cause, and how did you fix it?

Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated.

KM1983,

Camera shake becomes more pronounced or evident at longer focal length. Do you use a tripod at those longer lengths?

First of all which 70-200mm lens do you have. Please provide the FULL & COMPLETE NAME of the lens. 70-200mm lens doesn't mean much since Canon has made multiple of them between EF & RF Mounts. Is an EF-RF Mount adapter being used? If so is it the Canon brand mount adapter or is it a 3rd Party one. If Canon is it the basic one, control ring or filter adapter. A complete name would be RF 70-200mm F/4L IS USM lens or EF 70-200mm F/2.8L USM lens. Having the exact lens name is critical to determine the exact problem. Are you using H+ Shooting? What shutter mode are you using? Full Mechanical, EFCS (Electronic Front Curtain Shutter) or ES (Fully Electronic Shutter).

Im using an canon ef 70 to 200mm f2.8L USM with a mount adapter. I even tried another Canon mount adapter to see if that was the issue and it was not . I tried high continuous mode and low continuous mode and still the same .I was using electrical shutter but changed to mechanical to see if that would also make a change. No changes

Are you using H+ shooting drive. That lens is too old to support it. The lens aperture cannot stop down fast enough for it. That lens was released in 1995 before any camera could shoot more than 8 FPS. Does the lens even try to AF. Try to take pictures in One Shot AF and see if the lens will AF. I would also turn off eye detect AF too. That lens came out before it existed. So it more than likely doesn’t support it. Or it’s too slow to keep up with it.

Tried all of that. Has anyone had issues with their ibs malfunctioning?

What do you mean my “ibs” malfunctioning. Do you mean IBIS. That lens doesn’t have optical IS. So the camera uses its on internal IBIS to help stabilize lenses without optical IS.

Yes i mean ibis

How is IBIS malfunctioning please describe it. Or show us a video of it malfunctioning. Can you try the lens on a different camera such as another DSLR if possible. Instead of the adapter in the middle. Also could you try it on another RF camera if you don’t have access to another DSLR. Either works so we can narrow down the problem.

Im not sure if it is malfunctioning. I dont have a dslr but I use my 35mm (ef lens) with an adapter and  this lens does not have stablization and works well with no blur on my camera. But when I use the 70 to 200mm, I have both ibis on and my lens has stablization too. Wondering if I turn off ibis or the lens one, if it would make a difference
