Studio Light suggestions

Captdanno
Enthusiast

Creating a small studio in my garage albeit that I am new to flash photography but would like to hear opinions out there for lighting options.  I have looked at Adorama TV  and watched many of the very good videos they have on studio lighting but would like to hear from you guys in the field as well.

I will be using my new Canon 5d mark 3 and my new lenses 24/105 4.0 and the 70/200 2.8 11

At least you're well equipped so far. I have all three of those items myself, and I predict you're goinna like them a lot.  :smileywink:

Glad to hear that, kinda dove in with recomended gear and other than sticker shock no regrets.  As my cousin always says "If your gonna be a bear might as well be a grizzly" I had to laugh at that one although thats coming from someone who has no budget.

So two alien bees one with big shoot through umbrella and one soft box, or is soft box with a different light acting as a fill

There is no way to say that is a good outfit or not.  You really need to know what you are shooting.  Than choose your equipment and set up.  Every shot has simular things but not exact things usually.

I believe that having used a rebel for years, so tell me do you use umbrellas or soft box or both.

After moving to softboxes I only use my umbrellas for architectural work - when throwing light everywhere is exactly what I'm trying to achieve.  With all the generic softboxes available, at not much more than the cost of an umbrella, I recommend soft boxes.

If you have the space to store them Fotodiox makes some very sturdy models of all different shapes and sizes.  This one is for speedlights, but they make them for studio lights as well:

And if space is a premium these types fold down just like umbrellas.  You'll need an umbrella mount as well:

The best part about Paul Buff lighting equipment is you can buy it and use it and then return it if you don't like it. I set up my studio with AB's and love it. I tried different modifiers until I got a setup that works for me. I ended up returning a bunch of stuff with no drama and kept the pieces that I wanted. They're a great company with great policies and prices.

If you buy equipment before you know what you are shooting, you are going to buy a lot of equipment.
