R8 vs R6: Best Handling Camera?

Hiya everyone, I’m here seeking some advice. I have a back problem and I’m interested in an R8, coming from a 6D: new tech and light body looks interesting. Still, I’m not convinced at all by the handling (the feature I value the most in a camera body) of the R8, while the R6 II looks perfect in that regard. I have pretty big hands and find the multi control jog/joystick really useful.

Owners of both: which one would you pick? Budget it’s not an issue.

Many thanks in advance!

Absolutely agree across the board on the R6II except for the power switch, which may or may not be an issue - I just wanted the OP to be informed of that difference from their existing layout.  If it's critical, then the R6 is there, if not I'd go for the R6II, if they are ok with the price - I gather it's on sale right now for you lucky US buyers!

I probably should have given more context.  The R8 is my close second.  My preference for the mkII and R8 is due to their updated AF, focus algorithms and additional MPs above the R6. Less important is size, but the height of the R8 is too compact for me.  Another big consideration for my preference is battery size and power.  I acknowledge we all have different needs.

There are half as many reasons to choose the R8, but unless size and weight is the primary consideration, the R6 mkII is a lot of camera for the money. I believe its worthy of consideration since a refurb can be had for under the price of a new R6.

Big hands gets the R6mkII vote from me (assuming cost savings isn't a primary motivator)

I'm an enormous fan of the R8, it's my wife's, fits her perfectly, and takes remarkable pics even in the near dark (exactly like the R6mkII).  It's very compact lightweight and travels exceptionally well... but... I do notice my fingers fumbling just enough more that I appreciate getting back to my bigger R7 body (essentially R6 sized) .  If you're been a comfortable 6D shooter with BIG hands then make your move to mirrorless with a bigger more familiar body in relation to the controls and you'll enjoy all the mirrorless benefits even more.

I can confidently recommend an R8 to anyone looking for stellar performance at an economical price but as a guy with big hands and 30+ years of Canon larger body history an R8 wouldn't be my first or only mirrorless camera.

Good luck with the important choice!

Chris
