R5 mark 2 new firmware version 1.2.0, says camera can't be downgraded

I just noticed the R5 mark 2 has a new firmware that was released on november of 2025. The version number is 1.2.0. My camera firmware is 1.1.1 which tells me 1.2.0 is a newer version. However trying to update it to 1.2.0 gives me the error message that the camera cannot be downgraded. Has anyone else had an issue like this.

No, did the R5II and R1 without problems. I'd check again if you've got the right update(or just download again). Try with only one card or through Canon connect app.(I just used a cardreader and put the FIR file in the root directory.)

I will give it another try later. I did read what's in the update and I was hoping they would enable some sort of open gate shooting but that is not listed as one of the updates on this firmware.

I was trying to update the camera using the eos utility 3 instead of using the option to put it on the memory card.

Greetings,

Check the root directory of your card.  If the v1.1.1 is still present the camera is reading the wrong firmware file.

If you haven't tried it:

  1. format the card in the camera
  2. put the card in your computer and put 1.2.0 on it
  3. remove the card from the computer
  4. put it in the camera and try loading it.
