R5 ii viewfinder displays last exposure

On my Canon R5 ii, why would the viewfinder sometimes -- but not always -- display the most recent exposure even with these settings?

When this happens, the previous exposure is often still there after a minute or more with my eye away from the viewfinder.

JPG - L, no RAW, and no bursts longer than 3-6 frames.

Review duration: Off
Viewfinder display: Disable

So annoying it makes me miss prisms and mirrors!

Welcome!

Are those settings that you cited grouped together in the Blue Playback menus?  You shouldn’t need to change more than one setting to disable automatic playback after you take a shot.

Let’s do some troubleshooting. What is the behavior when the shooting mode is Intelligent Auto?

Sounds like you have a perfect bad storm of settings.  I recommend resetting those settings back to their factory defaults.

Why have you changed a viewfinder setting?  Do you take photos by only using the rear screen?  Provided you don’t raise the EVF to your eye it should not ever turn on.  Leave that one set to the factory default.  It should take care of itself.

Capturing a burst of images should not make a difference.  Only the most recent image is displayed.  The last one, in other words.

The settings I cited are grouped together in the Red (camera) menu, specifically 1/9 and 8/9.

In the Yellow (wrench) menu, 3/6, under Screen/viewfinder display, I've tried both Auto 1 & Auto 2.

I don't use A+ mode, only M, AV, & FV. Same thing happens in all 3 -- i.e., when I next raise the EVF to my eye it turns on displaying the last previous exposure.

My reason for mentioning the Image Review settings (Red menu, 8/9) is that if those did what I understand the labels and Canon's manual to say, then I should never see previous exposures displayed in the EVF.

P.S. I've been shooting Canon SLR's & DSLR's since 1972, but this is my first mirrorless.

if you refuse to try basic troubleshooting, then there’s not much more I can do to help.

I suggest you contact Canon.
