R5 and R6 error 70 headache

I have been plagued this year with the error 70 code. My r6 had the code appear throughout a wedding at the beginning of the year, after sending it away to be repaired (I think they just updated the firmware) I had it back ready to start wedding season. The next time I used it the error 70 started again, usually towards the end of the wedding day. It was sent back for repair and after a hefty repair bill of £900 to change the main board I received it back. It had been away for weeks at this point right though wedding season and I had been keen to upgrade to the R5 for a while so after losing trust with the R6 bought the R5.

First wedding with the R5, halfway through the day and error 70 starts happening on the brand new camera! It is a new SD card so this doesn't appear to be the issues, I'm now trying to eliminate what's causing it, either the adaptor? or I also use the Godox flash aswell? The most stressful part has been that I have lost photos because of this error code. Throughout the reception the error code got worse and worse and around 50 images that appeared on the back of the screen after taking them have vanished from the memory card. So the error code has also effected the images saving to the sd card. I have tried data recovery to no avail.

The repair shop mentioned that they are getting this a lot with the new mirrorless canons, what's going on? I still luckily have my second as the 5d mkiii and what a work horse that camera is, no issues many years on where as the mirrorless have been an expensive headache so far and starting to lose trust in them.

Greetings ,

Vanishing images, two bodies, same error.

Can you please provide specific details about all of the accessories and lenses you're using with the cameras?  Lens, cards, flash, batteries and adapters, etc.  Brands, models etc.

I'm surprised to find this forum now. Error 70 is most commonly caused by a Godox or any other 3rd Party flash unit failing to Interpret the AF Assist Beam signal on an EOS R series camera. This problem dates back to the original R & RP cameras. When Canon brought out the EOS R series they had to find a way to make existing speedlites with an IR AF Assist Beam work for AF Assist. Then make them use Intermittent Flash Firing instead. Existing speedlites with only an IR AF Assist Beam option already support Intermittent Flash Firing. The problem is older cameras released prior to 2007 don't support it. They lack the necessary hardware for it to work but new bodies already support it. Speedlites with a choice between IR & Intermittent Flash Firing always use Intermittent Flash Firing regardless of the AF Assist Beam projection set in the speedlite's Personal Function's menu. Canon modified the AF Assist Beam signal in EOS R series cameras to accomplish this. 3rd Party Speedlites don't understand the modified AF Assist Beam signal and lock up the camera.

Well, we never heard back, so no idea what the outcome was.  Might have been the 3rd party accessories.  Could have been a faulty lens too.

The OP said that they had a Godox flash unit.

Turns out it was the flash! Since learnt it’s been an issue for a number of people. Just annoyed the repair place didn’t mention that it could be this at all as they must have come across the error code before too. No problems since using other flash guns

This problem is mainly caused by Godox speedlites. Godox reverse engineers Canon’s flash protocol. Canon DOES NOT tell 3rd Parties how their flash system works. Godox still hasn’t fixed the issue with their speedlites yet. I can use my old 550EX from 1998 and it works perfectly on modern cameras. No error codes and no locking up. But yet a Godox product from a few years ago causes problems.
