Question about calibrating AFMA on 7dmkii with sigma 150-600mm cont.

So, I do wildlife photography and going through all my photos recently, and seeing that they arent really fully in focus. Maybe the lens isnt sharp, but it should be sharper. With deep researching(5 minutes) I found out about AFMA, searched up some things and found out that my neutral 0,0,0,0 afma values wont cut it. So, without buying anything, how can I calibrate it at home?
yes I have a tripod
Thanks,
Samuel

Greetings ,

In addition, I would suggest investing in the sigma USB dock, and sigma Optimization Pro software.  The dock is $59 bucks and the software is free.  Trust me, it's worth looking in to.  This will help you get the most from your lens.

what do those do?

Key Functions:
  • Firmware Updates: Keep your lenses up-to-date with the latest improvements and bug fixes directly from Sigma.
  • Autofocus calibration: Fine-tune the lens's autofocus to correct for focus errors with specific camera bodies, delivering sharper images.
  • Customization: Adjust various parameters like the focus limiter (especially for Sports lenses) and assign functions to buttons on the lens.

I have owned many Sigma lenses over the years and the dock and software has proven invaluable.

Make certain that it’s for the EF mount.  I used my copy on more than one DSLR. So calibrating it to a specific body was not the best idea I discovered.  I needed a “neutral” setting that could be used with more than one body.

Aftet zeroing out the calibration settings, I did a lot of testing on my bodies.  I noticed a pattern emerging, The lens was pretty much spot on throughout the middle of the zoom range, 200-400mm.

But I was getting some front focusing towards the extremes, which would get worse the closer I got to 150mm and 600mm. So I adjusted the lens for that!

I had tried to adjust AFMA in the camera previously, but encountered issues at the extremes.  That issue was now gone.

if its not the ef I can just return it, hopefully it is 😄

thanks a lot for this 😄 really helpful!

Take a picture of the lens mount on the lens itself. So users here can correctly identify the lens mount if it’s for Canon EF, Nikon F, Pentax K, Minolta/ Sony A Mount or Sony E Mount.
