Possible 80D Pink Photos Solution

Horsefeathers

Greetings All!

This is the solution post that might help someone with a similar issue. My 80D Canon was purchased as a bundle in 2016 with two Canon lenses at Costco. It has always taken photos especially in the mountains with a pink hue using telephoto. The Canon repair shop in Costa Mesa reset the camera, flashed the chip and replaced the lens to no avail. Here is the latest info. Hope this helps someone.

I took the Camera last week to Samys Camera in Costa Mesa and spoke to the manager repair expert Barry. Very nice fellow. He explained that setting the Camera to a true white priority as was suggested by a luminary on this site while in the green A+ dial mode is not really possible. That's where Canon had set the white priority. Barry explained to me that here will be ambiance added that can add hues from surrounding objects to white areas for example and other surfaces. Barry changed the dial from the green A+ to the white P and set to AWB Auto White Balance here. The photos he took in the parking lot to me still look pinkish. Let me know what you think? However as another Canon luminary suggested maybe its just my three laptop monitor displays? I'm initially creating this post on my phone. I'll head inside and add the two photos that are saved on my laptop for you to look at taken by the store manager Barry who himself is an expert camera instructor for many years. I next plan to take several photos using Barry's Auto White Balance setting in Big Bear. I might rent another Camera such as a mirror less from Samys Camera and take the same exact shot to compare. Hopefully this Auto White Balance setting with the dial set to the white P works.

I sincerely hope this helps someone out there.

Thanks All !

I was at the restaurant. All of the tiles were pure white. No flash was used. The wood even looks different in the two shots. Deeper color and clarity just using my phone. Possibly the telephoto has limitations? And the clarity is better with my phone. Also I wasn't expecting such a wide range of added pink when I took these test shots which illustrates my point. The changes in hue are random.

There is a fine gentleman who replied who really goes through some fine suggestions as did Barry in person. I will be studying his post.

If you bothered to read and comprehend the information I posted I mentioned using Barrys settings I was going to head to the mountains this winter and see if this solves adding unwanted pink hues to the mountain scene. We'll see. Hopefully it will. Also I will be renting another Camera with telephoto to compare the same shot. A worthy experiment. I can have Barry work the settings on that camera too. I also might try this other fine posters settings who kindly gave me his logs and custom settings more specifically for the mountains. Most kind of him to do that.

Lastly since it seems these posts can be viewed by most everyone I would just add please read my post on the reason I want true color. I'm not interested at all in an artistic masterpiece shot with a great artistic mix of colors. Since I'm trying to determine the composition of granite at various elevations I need thd camera to record the exact color my eye can see is true as it actually occurs with no variance in hue at all. Yes ... the Samsung camera has been far superior to my 80D thus far in doing this but ... it does not have a telephoto which was why I purchased the Canon bundled with a telephoto. I found the receipt the other day. Paid $1500.  Even my little cheap Lumix captures the true colors of my subjects better. But again with no telephoto. To capture the granite formations on my Big Bear drive higher on the slopes which would of necessity include the various mountain trees like Sugar Pine or Coulter Pine I need this telephoto ability.

Thank you Lee

Hope all is going great for you!

I'll post the results from my next mountain granite photo shoot.

Cheers all and thank you sincerely!

"And the clarity is better with my phone."

Then just use your phone. Problem solved.

Actually I have switched to using my phone for people pictures etc. Great true color. Facial colors perfect. Nearby blue lap is actually the real shade of blue. White shirt is not pink. What a concept ... true colors. As for the Canon 80D I'll try the settings from Barry in the mountains that he kindly dialed in for me when I visited his shop. And those from this other great poster breaking down his own settings for various shots and situations. Most kind of him as well. I'll be comparing these same shots to maybe a mirrorless Pentrex or mirrorless Canon I can rent. Stay tuned Lee. Always great hearing from you. Cheers!

Hi John ... thanks for your incredible post. Your photo of that mountain range is amazing. I purchased this bundled Costco Canon with a telephoto lens thinking if I set it to automatic the camera's default settings would capture the true colors of everything. The restaurant white tile photo compared to my phone shows pink is often added. My shots at higher elevation are mainly the decomposed granite formations and nearby associated trees. A geological study mainly. At events like the Renaissance Faire in Irwindale I see colors often blended with this pink hue. I use three HP laptops with different monitors for viewing and two other full sized monitors on my two server racks. I really appreciate your in depth settings. It took time for you to assemble all of that for me. Ill study all of that. On my next mountain granite study trip I'll post a few shots. Thanks John!
