Thank you. I'm running the recovery software now but waiting tentatively! It's taken around 4 hours so far.
It does say it has found a number of files which would be around the amount that I lost, but it hasn't finished yet. So fingers crossed.
I will use a full size sd card from now on and hopefully this will avoid it happening again.

Any advice on this and if I might be able to change the format so to view them would be really helpful!

Three possibilities:
1. Install Adobe Acrobat Reader (free software) to red the PDFs.
2. See if you can configure the recovery software to save a different file type, like JPEG.
3. Does the website for the software provide guidance?

It's highly likely that the data is corrupt. Cameras wouldn't capture image or video data as PDF. The recovery software assumed it found PDF files for some reason. Sometimes such software has to guess as what the files may be.
