Photos not saved! 250d

All the pictures I took in an afternoon have all disappeared from the sd card. Card wasn't full and I was able to playback images after they'd been taken but when I went to transfer them at the end of the day, they were gone! Any thoughts/ ideas/ advice on whether this has happened to anyone else and if images can be recovered?
Many thanks in advance

I discovered my Dell has a slot for a SD card.

Hi John,

Thank you. I'm running the recovery software now but waiting tentatively! It's taken around 4 hours so far.
It does say it has found a number of files which would be around the amount that I lost, but it hasn't finished yet. So fingers crossed.
I will use a full size sd card from now on and hopefully this will avoid it happening again.

Update: files are present on card but I can not view them on my computer. Pc says file format is not supported?? (files are pdf and operating system is Win10).
Any advice on this and if I might be able to change the format so to view them would be really helpful!

Three possibilities:

1. Install Adobe Acrobat Reader (free software) to red the PDFs.

2. See if you can configure the recovery software to save a different file type, like JPEG.

3. Does the website for the software provide guidance?

I have Adobe and it doesn't want to open them. It's strange because it has only happened to most but not all of images I took. I'm trying to think if I changed a setting somewhere on the camera but pretty sure I didn't. The recovery software has a helpline so I might have to call them for advice

It's highly likely that the data is corrupt.  Cameras wouldn't capture image or video data as PDF.  The recovery software assumed it found PDF files for some reason.  Sometimes such software has to guess as what the files may be.
