New EOS R1 won't boot / turn on

CanonCameraUser

I just received my EOS R1 today and unfortunately it won't turn on!

Here is what happened:

- I inserted a dead battery and the camera did not turn on. The camera turned on later when I inserted a charged battery. I selected a language from the view finder in the initial setup screen. On the screen to select the date and time I opened the LCD display to continue setup from there. At this point the viewfinder and LCD went blank and would not come back up. I waited a few minutes, then removed the battery as the camera seemed stuck.

- now the displays will not turn on. No lights will turn on. I've tried removing the battery for a few minutes. I've tried removing any attached lens as well as any memory card. I tried attaching to a computer via USB to see if EOS Utility would recognize it, but it did not. Nothing seems to help.

- If I put the bottom of the camera right up to my ear and insert a battery into the camera, I can hear a momentary buzz, so something is powering on, but nothing functions from there.

Does anyone have ideas on how to force a factory reset with some combinations of holding down the buttons while putting the battery in? Or any other ideas to get this working?

Greetings ,

Remove all accessories from the camera.  Cards, lens, etc.  Install the body cap.

Remove the battery.  Press and hold the power button for 15 sec.  Charge the battery fully.

Reinsert the battery.  Be sure you check the latch on the media door.  Ensure it's locked.  Attempt to power on.   What is the result?

I tried that all just now. It took a few hours for the battery to charge to 100%, it previously was over 50%, but not 100%. I get the same result. No lights come, no display lights up, no sounds when pressing buttons. As I lock the battery I can hear a very short buzz, again when holding my ear close to the camera body, but it lasts less then a second. Other than that tiny buzz there is no signs of life in the camera.

Seeking assistance by contacting Canon support could be a simple fix. It costs you zero and the staff at Canon are some of the most knowledgeable and hard working individuals that you will find in our industry.

It only makes sense to give it a try prior to giving up and making the return. Save yourself some time and frustration and call them @ 800-385-2155 or 800-652-2666

Greetings,

Next step is up to you.  You can call Canon support but my recommendation is exchange with the retailer.  At this price point the camera needs to work out of the box.  I understand this is going to be painful.  Unfortunately It sounds like you're that that one in a million.  Brand new body DOA.  Please update the thread with your outcome.

Your camera could need service. If you just bought it, then I suggest that you contact the retailer that sold it to you.

Thanks all for the advice. I was hoping for some other ways to debug this without having to send it back to be exchanged or fixed. I'lm reaching out to the retailer now to exchange it for a working version.

I just bought an R1, charged battery fully.

Exactly as your experience,  camera is a brick. Not at all pleased.
