I have a Canon XTI. I have had since 2005ish. Recently it seems like it needs more light to properly expose a photo and is just generally unreliable. I can be in the same room and take many photos and some will be ok and others are very dark and unsalvageable. Why would this happen? Thanks in advance.

There are many reasons that this can happen, if you are certain that you have the camera set up correctly and it is not a case of "operator error" then the first thing to try is reset the camera to factory defaults ( this is in the camera menu ).
If the fault still persists then try using another lens, if that doesn't help then it must be a fault with the camera body.

It could be the flicker from artificial lighting, fluorescents and LEDs.
