My Canon EOS Rebel XT will not take pictures in any setting, and will not turn off

My Canon EOS Rebel XT suddenly decided not to take any pictures. I was using it one minute, and the next minute nothing was happening when I hit the button. It would depress, but nothing was happening. Then the camera wouldn't turn off, and I had to take the battery out to get it to shut off. I've tried replacing the watch battery, recharging the battery, taking them both out, removing and replacing the lens, and using all of the settings. Nothing.

Any help is appreciated!

Try a different lens.

First before you do take out the batteries, both of them.  Get a new batery.
