I recently purchased a Canon 6D....

I wanted to upgrade from my Rebel. I have several lenses already and noticed that when I use them on my 6D there is a round black ring around the outside edges. Upon reading it seems that the Rebel has a "cropped frame" and the 6D has a "full frame". Does this mean that I have to get all new lenses to use with my 6D, and make sure they are EF?

So what you are saying is even though Tamron, Sigma, or other brands that state that they will specifically fit certain Canon Cameras, they don't?

I had good luck with the Tamron that was on my 20D and the Sigma that I bought for my Rebel, they have been good lenses. I always read plenty of consumer reviews before I buy. I do not always have the option of "trying" before I buy. How would I go about doing that? Renting?

I appreciate your input on this matter. I have sold a few of my pictures and I wanted a better quality, newer camera. Couldn't always afford the Canon lenses, so the less expensive alternative worked, just tried not to go "cheap". I am attending a workshop in the spring with a professional, I am excited and hoping to really get a lot of good experience and learning. I do better with the hands on experience.

Thanks again!

What does that Tamron quote mean in "English"? Why does it shut down my older DSLR Rebel?
This lens is a new model, is what the repair shop said, so my older camera basically isn't "new" enough to work with it. Because they don't service Tamron, they told me to contact the manufacturer to see if it can be modified. (I haven't done this yet).

Wow, OK let's give this a go.

First even though a third party lens maker says their lens work with Canon cameras does not mean it will work with all Canon cameras.  Some of them can be re-chipped to work some can't.  Some can even have their mount changed to a different brand camera.  Some can't.

The red and white dots indicate where the lens mounts because of the different mounts of the lens.  You need to be sure you learn the jargon of the lens makers.  EF is for Canon full frame cameras like your 6D.  EF-S is designed for crop cameras like you old 20D.  All lenses will fit your 20D but not all will fit the 6D.  Sigma uses DC for FF and DG for crop.  Tamron is not so clear so you must read the specs.

You really need to get your optics sorted so you know exactly what you have.  At this point I would stop, immediately, using the lens that shuts down the 6D.  You can do permanent damage to the camera.

Can you provide a list of your lenses to me?  The exact name that is on the lens, I mean?  Maybe I can help you decide what works and what don't.

Remember it is always, at least usually, best to stick with Canon brand lenses or any accessory for that matter.  Otherwise you need to do your research.

I currently have 40 or 50 lenses in my old darkroom and probably had 150+ over the years.  I have some experience with lenses and how well they do or poorly.  I can't guarantee I can get you an answer but I might.  I usually don't buy or use any of the lesser off-brand third party lenses.  They are generally not worth the plastic they are made from.

But even in them there are a few gems. Smiley Happy

Like most people I have my favorites but they tend to be quite expensive.  There is a fact most people don't realize.  A better camera does not equate a better photo.  A lot of cameras even share the same sensor for instance.  However, a better lens will always improve the photo.  Glass is where it's at.

I should have said mounts to the camera body.

It works on my 6D with black edges. It shuts down the Rebel AND the 6D.
I love the lens, it takes awesome pics. Going to contact Sigma and see if the can do something to help it work on my Rebel. I literally just got this lens a couple months ago, just before getting my new 6D. Because it wouldn't work with my Rebel is why I bought the 6D but I didn't realize the 6D was a full fra

Why would Sigma be able to help?  Didn't you say it was a Tamron Piiezo Drive 16-300 mm lens?

Whatever, if it were me I would not use it.  Shutting down the camera is not a good thing.  Something is wrong.

I meant to say Tamron, they may be able to give me more information or modify the lens for me.

If they can, they will want the lens and the camera.  And it will take some time before you get it back.
