I have a Canon EOS Rebel G 35 mm and suddenly the batteries have quit working.

The LCD panel indicates all is well (including the battery), I aim the camera and press halfway to focus and everything still seems to be fine, then when I press down the rest of the way to take the picture nothing happens. A look back at the LCD screen shows an empty battery (which flashes a few times) with nothing else on the screen. I have changed batteries and still get the same result.

Are the batteries making good contact? Is there anything on the contacts?

I have cleaned inside the battery compartment with a q-tip.

Bad move. You do not want use something that can scratch, or leave residue behind, in this case lint and cotton fibers.
