Hi i am using my 20D with my 24-105,
Over the last couple of years Err99 has shown up but after turning the camera on and off a couple of time to clear the err it resolved it self.
yesterday err99 raised it head again and while shooting was resolved by turning the camera on and off.
to rectify the issue. once home I gently rubbed the contacts on the lense with a dry lense cloth as I do not have access to iso promo and did not like some of the comments about abrasive rubbers and or leaving more residue and pits behind.
today when the camera attempts to auto focus the F stop is showing up as "00" and the camera will not take a shot !!!!!
issue will only resolve by disconnecting the lense and reconnecting. Initially showing F4 it but again once the camera tries to auto focus it locks up with an F stop of "00" on the screen.
i also have a 70-200 and I am not getting this issue when I change to and shoot with this lenses.
the 24-105 is my main lense for shoots and I have one tomorrow ! So I do not have the option of sending it off to canon even if there was a service center in my current country/region
Has any one come across this befor and are there any "at home" fixes ????
thanks

Morning guys
following up on the two comments and advice from yesterday.
ezpop the pins in the camera body look to be all the same length, but thanks for that great idea
East brilliant idea about the body cap I did this and it DOES show the same issue F 00
i reatachhed my 70-200 and shot a few snaps with no issues.
Switched out for the 24-105 and managed to get 3 frames befor err 99 and then it locked up with F 00
the date code seams to be reading March 08 and the lense was bought second hand, with this in mind I got out a magnifying glass and some how it seams the contacts have got prity severely worn some how ? It looks like the pins did it but there is no sign of ware on them. Very odd .....
has as any one herd of getting the contacts replaced and if any idea of cost ? The more and more we get into this it looks like the lense will be a costly fix or it might be dead 😞 hear is a pic of the contacts, not a great one but iPad was having issues handling the reflection off the gold, but you can see a distinct uniform ware line / score line across all the contacts

Doesn't look too bad to me.
Repeat;
"When you can, get the camera checked out along with the lens.
The fact the other lens works doesn't mean anything. Get the camera looked at."

Try test the 24 105 on another camera body to eliminate that it's the problem of your camera.
It's not easy to repair the lens youself. Go search some videoes on the youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ib2JMYSKqJI (not for this particular F00 problem but just to give an idea of the task) It's not just the contact part to replace. It may be some flex cables and others. It's not a task for someone with no experience. Even if you have luck and can identify the problem and replace the defective parts, you risk having to adjust alignment of the glasses which is practically impossible for DIYers without the factory machines. (check lensRental blog) Canon service charges a flat rate for the repair plus shipping. It should be less than $300.

It appears the OP's lens has some problems with the contacts. I looked at mine and saw a major difference between mine and his. The contacts on his lens have some nasty looking wear spots. I think this is a case for the experts in the Canon fix-it shop. If the OP is a member of CPS he might get a break on estimates for the work.
