EOS Rebel T7 How to turn off exposure simulation

Hi there,

I own a Rebel T7 (very simple food photographer for my own work).

I use off camera flash (with a flash trigger in the hot shoe). Until today, I had never ever used the on camera flash.

So, previously whenever i'm shooting flash (tethered or live view) the screen would be black until i focused for the picture. I couldn't find Exposure Simulation on any menu to turn it off.

Someone in a different topic post  mentioned that their rebel t6 automatically turns off exposure simulation when they use the flash. So I tested it...if i use the on camera flash, it does show the ambient light view of whats happening on the screen. But...the on camera flash has to be up, and it doesn't do the same thing when my flash trigger is in.

Is there some way to utilize this feature but without using the on camera flash?

There isn’t a way to disable exposure simulation on a Rebel series camera. Any external flash that uses E-TTL also disables exposure simulation. The camera cannot predict how flash will affect the picture before it fires.

It is down to the trigger used for the studio flash, it needs to tell the camera that the flash is there and charged in order to automatically switch off exposure simulation like the built-in flash does.

For example I use a Godox X-Pro trigger with some studio lights I have, this trigger will automatically switch off exposure simulation. If I use a simple trigger with only a single central pin, then the simulation is not switched off automatically.

so I have the Godox X2T-C 2.4G Wireless Flash Trigger Transmitter Compatible with Canon with E-TTL II HSS 1/8000s Group Function LED Control Panel Firmware Update

Is there a way of figuring out if this has that capability and maybe I just havent been using it correctly?

I think this should be possible. With my trigger on the camera, then I see the flash ready icon appears in the lower part of the LCD display. When that appears the exposure simulation is turned off when the shutter is half pressed, the simulation stays off until the metering timer finishes.

On your camera you can change the duration of the metering timer with the Metering timer setting on the SHOOT5 menu.

I tried on an EOS 7D Mark II and by setting the metering time to 30 minutes the simulation stayed off until the camera shut off due to auto power off setting.

ahhh ok, so yes, when i half press, i DO see what is in front of my camera...but it has gone away shortly after. i didn't know about metering timer. i'll give that a go later today. thank you so much for your wisdom

sooo i turned the metering timer on for 30 minutes. i turned on my liveview...it was dark. i half pressed the shutter button and the screen became more visible and bright . i took a photo, and then it went back to being dark, making me half to half press again to get the live view bright.

this isn't that bad for on camera use, but when im tethering, i don't know (i use Capture One) if there's a way to do that half press of the shutter button every time.
