Hi
I’ve noticed that many Canon R5 users report excessive noise when shooting video – even at ISO 800– and I’m starting to wonder if ISO 800 on the R5 is actually higher than it appears.
Here’s what I’m seeing:
I shot a well-lit, properly exposed clip at ISO 800 – the result was surprisingly grainy.
I checked the EXIF metadata in Premiere Pro, it reported an ISO of 6400 – eight times what I had set.
To test this, I shot another clip at ISO 100 under similar conditions. The result looked clean and noise-free, but Premiere Pro’s EXIF data reported ISO 800. Still eight times the camera setting.
Since then, I’ve tested several ISO settings, and in every case, the EXIF reading is consistently 8x higher than the in-camera setting.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a Premier Pro True EXIF data issue?
I’ve searched online but haven’t found anything about this. Any insights would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Thanks everyone.
I should have thought of this earlier: I just completed another test using two different Canon R5 bodies to see if the same ISO EXIF data issue occurs in Premiere Pro. It does.
I also tried two additional EXIF data reading apps on the same file, and both displayed the ISO data correctly. So it seems that Premiere Pro is NOT reading the EXIF data correctly.

Did you perhaps have Auto ISO enabled?
Do you have access to a light meter? If so, in your scene, meter for the ambient at 1/100 shutter and ISO 800. If you end up with f/2.8, then perhaps this is an issue with Premiere showing incorrect values? But if the meter shows an aperture of around f/1.0, then a proper exposure would be f/2.8, 1/100, ISO 6400.

After checking with exiftool, I suspect that ISO is not in the expected location in the meta data. But, I was using auto ISO. Maybe if I get some time later, I will try to track down where the actual ISO is stored for video.
In this example, the viewfinder showed auto ISO as 2000:
exiftool -s -G0:2 -h -filename -"*ISO*" /Volumes/EOS_DIGITAL/DCIM/100CANON/IMG_3528.MP4
File:Other | FileName | IMG_3528.MP4 |
MakerNotes:Camera | CameraISO | Auto |
MakerNotes:Image | AutoISO | 100 |
MakerNotes:Camera | ISOSpeedIncrements | 1/3 Stop |
MakerNotes:Camera | HighISONoiseReduction | Standard |
