EOS 80D: USA or Grey Market

I recently bought a Canon EOS 80D from MPB. It arrived yesterday. This morning I tried to register the 80D through my Canon Professional Services account. When I entered required information including serial number a message displayed' The serial number you have entered is invalid for one or more of the following reasons:

1. The number entered dos not match the product you have selected (FCC ID which starts with AZD which is often mistaken for serial number.

2. The serial number entered indicates this product was not intended for sale in the United States and is ineligible for registration and support in the U.S.

I called CPS this morning. The analyst that answered the phone was happy to run the serial number. He said it was definitely grey market. It is a genuine Canon product it was never meant for sale in the United States. Since it was meant for another market it cannot be serviced.

I bought the camera from MPB. I have made some great buys from MPB as well as KEH. I have been able to register each one of them with my CPS account.

It's one of the reasons I have a CPS account. When buying used we must always perform due diligence. Since my first Canon purchase decades ago from a member of Fred Miranda I never had a problem with grey market Canon products as I have been able to register every one of them into my CPS account.

I've bought used from MPB, KEH, Fred Miranda and eBay. When I buy from anyone I make sure that they have a hassle free return police. If they don't I'll buy from someone else.

As soon as MPB's office opens on Monday I'll get a return label and send it back and exchange it for another 80D.

As long as it works, why bother. The end of service life is October 2027.  But , do check wireless connectivity. Not every country uses the same frequencies.

If something happens I won't be able to get it serviced. That's why I am bothering.

When I check the wireless and it doesn't work then who will make the repairs?

I don't mind going the extra mile. Nothing is worse than spending your hard earned money on anything and finding out later you can't have anyone to diagnose an issue because it is grey market.

Yes I have several months before toe 80D service life ends. When I get it replaced with a USA market camera I'll send it to CPS for 18 point maintenance, which is free to CPS members. If they discover any issues they'll make the necessary repairs for free.

So you see with all that going for me why would it ever be a bother?

MPB offers a warranty and return period on purchases and you can purchase an extended warranty from them. Second purchaser products have no Canon warranty. I don’t think you will get any repairs for free even as a CPS member.

Well, well well...Canon will provide maintenance and repair service for free provided the Canon product service life as not expired and that the Canon product is registered with CPS no matter if your not the original owner. I called CPS just now and was provided the good news.

So you see Membership to CPS does has its privileges.
