EOS 5D Mark III Images too dark in Tv and Av but OK in M

Hi, I shoot with a Canon 5D mkiii in manual and the lighting is fine, recently I tried to shoot in TV and AV but the images kept coming out dark even when I upped the ISO.

Does anyone have an idea of what could be wrong ?

Thanks Chris

@Chrisc99 In Av Tv Modes what would be the light meter is now the scale for Exposure Compensation (EC). It can be accessed from the LCD screen. The area highlighted in the picture is where you need to adjust it. If not already set to 0. It should be set at for the correct exposure. Unless you want to add or subtract Exposure Compensation (0).

Hi @Chrisc99 what settings are you using in Av & Tv Modes? What lens are you using please provide the full name. It sounds like your aperture is too small or your shutter speed is too fast. This will cause underexposed pictures.

Do you have example images with metadata that you can share? From what you're saying, it sounds like if you take a particular image in M, but then choose either Tv or Av, the camera is not choosing an equivalent exposure?

Can you please elaborate more about the "dark" issue? Does the image come out underexposed, or there is no image at all?

Hi i was using a Canon EF 16-35mm, f1.28 wide angle lens

Hi Ricky,

Unfortunately i was shooting a wrestling show in a hotel conference room so i changed back to manual. I have however taken 3 shots today in RAW one in manual, one in AV and one in TV. They are in a google folder https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/11slB6Wl1JaVHVeEqn7gDYF_3kYACOEoF?usp=drive_link

Thanks Chris

@Chrisc99 First Canon never made a “EF 16-35mm, f1.28” lens. Canon has made multiple 16-35mm lenses though. So which one is it so we can give you the correct information. We need to the exact name listed on the lens.

  • EF 16-35mm F/2.8L USM
  • EF 16-35mm F/2.8L II USM
  • EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III USM
  • EF 16-35mm F/4L IS USM
