Either one, as long it is not a microSD card. If it takes a long time without a card, then the camera is faulty, which I suspect it is.

I too had this happen. The cure:
1. Download all photos on the SD card (file CANON100)
2. Delete any Canon firmware updates on the card
3. Reformat the SD card in the camera
4. Upload photos back to the SD card (CANNON100 file)
5. Camera operation should return to normal
The other information on the internet suggesting different brand cards are the problem is nonsense.
