I don’t know if anyone follows rumors about canon, but I’m hoping the community here has an insider or two that can verify if an R1 mark ii or R3 mark ii is in the works? Canon has pledged support for the R3 which makes me think this is the camera especially since the R1 hasn’t been out very long. An R3 mark ii though doesn’t make sense to have in the lineup though given the specs of the R5 mark ii. Can anyone add light to this post? Personally, I see canon killing off the R3 line and maximizing their R1.

Canon rumors are always fun.
To me the R3 seems like an odd man out, but it's not in my orbit of wants and desires so my opinion means little.
I am interested in the supposed "RE-1" i.e. the mirrorless, retro-looking homage to the AE-1 and will impulse buy because while I love my Canons, I also love the look of vintage 35mm SLRs.
I have also read that the R100 is getting replaced with an all-new R100 with things such as an articulating screen.
Of course we won't know until we know, but I have sent loyal Pentax fans into paroxysms by saying that Ricoh should license the RF mount and some Canon engineering to make boutique, retro-looking mirrorless Pentaxes in the form on an ME2 and a K2-M. Heads exploded, but retro mirrorless cameras would definitely give me G.A.S. (gear acquisition syndrome).

Greetings,
The next announcement that I am aware of will be on September 9th. It will be for the C50 which is rumored to be the replacement for the R5 C. It's possible a second body could also be announced, but it's not going to be an R1 or an R3 successor. Following this we should see announcements for the R6 mkIII and the R7 mkII.
I'm sure we'll see some new RF lenses announced as well. 🙂

I have seven working SLR's (along with other film cameras) that I use very often. I wish Canon would not only make a retro looking mirrorless, but also make a new 35mm camera like Rollei and Pentax have done. I would be first in line for both!

Loyal Pentax fan here since 1984. I currently have four of their SLRs (owned five others over the years), one DSLR (sold the other two) and the new Pentax 17 half frame film camera. I think your idea is fantastic, Lee. I'll buy you a coffee if you can find the right guy at Pentax to pass your ideas off to. 😁

The fate of the R3 is a question. The R3 is 24mp, 4year old tech, and has been effectively replaced by the R1. Currently it sales at a $1000 discount to it's retail price. Apparently, the R3 is still being produced, not sure why! Unless they want to keep the production line going.
I shoot wildlife and have the R5m2 and R6m2. I want to upgrade my R6m2, but I'm unsure what to do. At the moment, I'm not overwhelmed with the " rumored specs " for the R6m3. The R3 is 24mp and 4 years old tech, so no. I'm thinking about buying a 2nd R5m2, but have been waiting ( I have time before my next trip ) to see what is going on with a possible upgrade for the R3.
I believe Canon catered to the photojournalists with both the 24mp R1 and the f2.8 100-300 ahead of the Olympics and World Cup. People talk about the R1 & 100-300 for wildlife, but I don't think they are optimal. I prefer the 45mp R5 and longer glass, which is my personal preference. Everyone has their own preferences.
Both Nikon & Sony have high megapixel pro cameras, which they are selling. There is a demand for this option. Canon only has the R5, BUT the 5 series does not have the advanced features of the R1. Advanced features such as : smart controller, larger battery, 2 cf express cards, advance auto focus, etc. In my opinion, Canon needs a high megapixel pro camera to compete with Nikon & Sony. There are some unreliable rumors out there, but no one really knows until we get a reliable source. I suspect it's coming, but when ( early 2026 or late 2027 ) is the real question.

As mentioned earlier, it looks like Canon will announce a RF 85 f1.4 L VCM on Sept 9th along side the C50. The other lens could be an RF 11-55mm (rumor) but we don't know at this point. 🤔

I know it's a rumor, but if Canon does come out with an RF 11-55mm that just might be the lens that never leaves my camera (other than for sports).

I shoot 35mm with a Pentax 17, K2, ME, MX, K1000, MV, MG, Nikon F, FM, Minolta SRT202. I've been known to head out with a Sekonic meter and a meter-dead KM or my other K2 that is meter dead but operates at all speeds perfectly.
I've wanted a Canon A1. The AE1 and A1 obliterated Pentax. Canon smartly designed the AE1 so that it could be the AT1, AV1, A1, AE1P, and AL1. Pentax did two cameras ME and MX but very stupidly didn't develop the MX. When they wanted an aperture priority auto and manual, they put the idiotic, non-ergonomic buttons on the ME and called it "Super" rather than dropping an electronic shutter in the MX to make an MA and a multi-mode MM. Instead they took the wonderful ME and staggered through the Super (not as reliable as an ME), MV (failure), MV1 (a quick redo of the MV that failed), the MG (that pretended to be an ME and failed) and the truly dismal MEF that was an epic fail. By the time they went multi-mode with the Super Program the A1 was five years old and they had lost a LOT of market share to Canon and Canon was moving on the the next new thing.
I stuck with Pentax until autofocus and when I compared Pentax's Rube Goldberg shaft drive AF versus Canon's EOS, there was no question which one was a quantum leap better.

That sounds like a nice lineup of film cameras, Lee. It's nice to see others that still embrace film in addition to their digital work. The K2 DMD and ME were two I wish I still had. I did have the ME Super back in the 1980's, but that had constant shutter problems. I love the simplicity of the Spotmatic and K1000... both are heavily used compared to my other cameras. I was recently given a K1000 SE by a friend, which is much nicer to focus. I have the PZ-70, but I just don't care for that one much.
I had to laugh at your comment about the Sekonic meter and the dead light meters. I have a Miranda DR which I love, but there never was a light meter in that model... so yes, I have to bring the Sekonic when I use that.
I have wanted a Canon A1 for a long while, but I have too much invested in K-mount and M42 mount lenses... (in addition to all of the EF & RF digital lenses) and really can't see me investing in another mount system of lenses.
You're not kidding about the Rube Goldberg AF. lol

I love Pentax. I am a diehard Pentax fan. But I'm not messianic when something is better. Pentax either got complacent or failed to hire engineers and they destroyed themselves.
For me--aside from the F1--no early to mid 70s Canon is what I would want. I'd rather have a Spotmatic than a TX. I'd rather have a KX than an FTb. I'd rather have a K2 than an EF. I prefer the ME to the AE1 esthetically, ergonomically, and functionally, BUT there is no question that Canon was on point with the AE1 and the A1 was the nuclear bomb blast that scored a direct hit against Pentax. Nikon had enough clout to get away with the FM/FE--I adore my FM--and Minolta tried really hard with the XD11 (??) and nearly got their footing back with the Maxxum, but Canon essentially put Konica, Pentax, Minolta, and the other low-hanging fruit out of business.
Canon landed with one competent design after another and that is how the game is won.
As mentioned, Pentax could license the RF mount and some Canon technology and make boutique, metal-era looking bodies and they would sell...sell...sell because like you and me there are people who love Pentax in addition to their joy of using Canon mirrorless.
What I find with film cameras--cameras in general--is that brands have a personality and then models within brands have a personality. My Nikon F and FM share a "Nikon" personality but each has a personality within that.
