What does it mean when the AF point flashes red

Under certain circumstances the AF points flash red once just as it achieves focus before they turn black.

I've suspected that this might mean that focus was not properly achieved, yet the focus confirmation indicator in the bottom right of the viewfinder is solid and not flashing.

It seems that this only happens when the subject is dark or perhaps low in contrast.

In low light it will do that to show it has locked focus. My EOS 5D Mark IV does the same thing in low light. It doesn’t do this in bright light. It’s designed to show you that the camera did actually lock focus.
