I was taking apart my canon EOS 500D because most buttons and the screen were not working. when I took it apart, I saw that the floppy cable connecting the main buttons and screen wasn't connected. I tried to put it back in but it wouldn't go back in. is my slot/cable broken?

Hard to say from that description, but there is often a lock or tab on those connectors, if it broke off, you may be out of luck. You might see if iFixit or equivalent has a teardown that gives more detail.
