Bird photos

Hello all! First post. I just picked up a t3i and am loving it. One question tho.. I am an amateur birder and am trying to start a collection of bird photos. Whenever I shoot them with the sky in the background (i.e.. Flying) the bird is coming out over exposed. I am currently using the sports mode. Which mode and settings would be best for this??

2 things to try. Learn how to use / set exposure compensation AND try each setting available for your light metering. If you can & are steady enough you may be able to use a menu to set the metering to the active AF spot.
