[BUG] EOS R5 Mark II Firmware 1.3.0 - Touch & Drag AF Locks Out All Controls (Requires Battery Pull)

Hello Canon Community,

I am reporting a critical software lockup introduced in Firmware Version 1.3.0 on the EOS R5 Mark II. This issue is already being reported by multiple users in global user groups, as documented in this Facebook thread.

The Bug:

While looking through the EVF and using Touch & Drag AF on the LCD screen, all physical controls instantly lock out.

Key Symptoms:

  • EVF stays alive: The live image does not freeze; the video feed continues to display normally in real time.

  • Control Lockout: The shutter button will not fire, and all dials/buttons/touch screen completely stop responding.

  • Power Switch Overridden: Flipping the switch to "OFF" does absolutely nothing. The camera stays running.

  • Forced Battery Pull: The only way to reset the camera and regain functionality is to physically remove the battery.

Environment:

  • Firmware: v1.3.0 (Happens across all shooting modes, though I regularly encounter it in P Mode).

  • Trigger: repointing the AF box via the touch screen while looking through the viewfinder.

The touch-priority software is failing to hand control back to the physical buttons. Hoping the forum moderators can flag this to the engineering team for an urgent firmware patch!

Having the same exact issue after firmware update Canon is aware and providing any update on this?

We don't know. Canon does not share things like that with us.

Again provide feedback as Waddizzle said above.

It is a user-to-user forum, hosted by Canon. To make sure your issues get to the right people, send feedback as above.

Totally agree with Ravox! Don’t try to hide problems to your customers seems to be customer relationships 1-1!
This seems to be a wide spread issue (many Reddit/Facebook users anre reporting it) and an acknowledgment and either timelines for resolutions, or resolution such as warranty repair would really be appropriate.

To be fair with Canon though, they contacted me, were very nice and are looking at my Settings files. But it has been a few days now and still have no clue. I was on a photo trip in Japan and that ruined most of its propose. So seriously frustrating and disappointing for hardware this grade.
@Rovox - I will keep you updated in case of resolution.

To send Canon a feedback about this where to send on their website?

The problem is that I use Touch & Drag AF all the time, and knowing that simply enabling it can completely freeze the camera is absurd. Releasing a firmware update with such a serious bug is extremely irresponsible on Canon’s part.

This happened while I was photographing my daughter’s graduation, and having the camera become unusable during such an important moment is unacceptable.

On the Canon usa website, look for the little (+)feedback button at the very bottom of the page.
