Autofocus only works in full auto mode

Hi--I have a Canon 5D I bought used in very good condition from a friend and my lens will only autofocus while the camera body is in full auto mode. Frustrated!! Any ideas?

It could be in back-button focus mode. Instead of a shutter half-press, you hit a button on the back of the camera. Try resetting the camera.
