Auto bracketing error after customizing buttons - EOS 5D Mark IV

Hello!

I work as a real estate photographer and use auto exposure bracketing (in Manual mode) most of the time when photographing with my EOS 5D Mark IV. When using auto bracketing in M-mode the camera adjusts the shutter speed to take the extra over- and underexposed pictures, keeping the same aperture value.

My problem is that the rubber wheel on the top dial (next to the shutter) on my camera has gotten very worn out and loose since I change shutter speed very often. It should probably be replaced, though first I decided to try switching the settings on the dials in the Custom settings menu, so that I could use the bigger front dial (next to the display) to change shutter speed and the top dial to change the aperture, instead of the other way around. However, when I switch place on the buttons and take images using auto bracketing, the camera changes the APERTURE instead of the shutter speed when taking the over- and underexposed photos, which I really don’t want. Does anyone know what the error might be, and if there is a way to fix it? I have never used any custom settings this way before, so maybe I’m doing something wrong.

I am a little surprised at the change you have seen with auto exposure bracketing switching to aperture when the dials are switched round. I don't have an EOS 5D Mark IV in my hands any more, but I just tried the same with the EOS 7D Mark II that I do have. When I switched the shutter speed to the dial on the back of the camera and aperture to the main dial by the shutter button there is no difference, the camera still changes the shutter speed when bracketing when using manual exposure mode and a fixed ISO value. I also tried with auto ISO and the aperture and ISO are the same, only the shutter speed changes.

Have you tried leaving the main dial controlling shutter speed, and also have the quick dial on the back control the shutter speed?

I tried having both dials control the shutter speed and then the auto exposure bracketing works correctly, but as soon as I change the main dial to control the aperture the camera starts changing the aperture in the auto exposure bracketing again… Very frustrating! I’m not changing anything else, so I don’t really understand what the problem might be.

I have the same issue with my Canon R6 mark ii. It seems like a bug in canon software in all cameras, my friend has the same issue with his R5 mark ii. Please fix this ASAP.

First and foremost, this is a social media platform.  It’s neither Canon Service or Support.  If you wish to report a bug, then you must reach out to Canon directly.

IMHO, I think the bug is allowing the to capture AEB exposures in M mode. Allowing the use of AEC and AEB in M mode has not always been available in the DSLRs. It didn’t become available until the use of ISO Auto in M mode became available.  Even then, AEC and AEB only controls ISO Auto settings.  It should stay that way.  

If AEC and AEB are to be allowed to change any leg, then only permit that in Fv mode.
