7d mkii lcd screen is black on startup until I press a button ???

What shooting mode are using? Try Auto as a test.

What happens if you press [Info] a couple of times before turn it off and Bach on?

Do you  have the User Manual for the camera? Download it from Canon Support if you don't. You will find all kinds of instruction on all the buttons on the camera.
