The topic continues to show up and we always get a couple of responses. I'm hoping this thread will build a consensus from the members that frequent the community to assist guests that come to the site looking for assistance.

I do use a high quality clear filter (B+W) when I am shooting in areas where dirt, sand or water may be thrown onto the front element of the lens.

For the most part I don't use any filters unless I'm looking to achieve a special effect. Three I always have with me are  infrared (IR), Graduated Neutral Density (GND) or Circular Polarizer (CPL). These normally get mounted in the field. I always use a hood, mostly to protect the front element against damage.

" I also take good care of my gear,  ..."

There is a difference between taking care of your gear opposed to idolizing it. Yeah, there is probably some grey area there always is because nothing is B&W except some images. However, I still contend if you lean more towards, what will happen to my camera/lens, I'll bet you miss some great shoots.

In my other life I teach music. I start kids off on a musical journey. It is funny some treat their instrument, a violin for instance, as it will break if they touch it. I tell them and maybe all of you, it isn't as fragile as it looks.

The bottom line, it is just a camera/lens. Take common sense measures but use your gear. A few scratches or dings just shows it's happy. Except the front lens element that is, it is fragile!

Well said!  It's just like buying a brand new car and you are afraid to get that first tiny scratch.  I always see that and think that's a relief... now I don't have to worry about that first scratch any more, then I treat the car like it was supposed to be treated. Not badly, just not babied.
