Unable to update firmware for Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L

Though following the instructions carefully, I have been unsuccessful in updating the firmware for my new RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L (from 1.1.0 to 1.1.4) on my EOS R (1.8.0). Have I bumped into an incompatibility with firmware given the R's paucity of updates?

Is it possible for you to give us more information?  "I have been unsuccessful" is not much of a clue.  Can you not copy the firmware to the card's root folder?  Is there an error message?  Does the update not appear in the update menu?  Is it greyed out?  Does the version number not change?  Is there any screen shot or photo of the error state you could share?

As for "an incompatibility with firmware", if the firmware you're trying to install is the correct firmware for that lens, then it should be compatible.  But make sure it is for the EXACT lens, i.e. the f/2.8, not the f/4.0.  Since I see that there is a firmware 1.4 for that lens, I guess you're OK there.

The latest firmware for the 70-200 f/2.8 is specifically for the R6 II that support focus breathing.
If you're trying to update an R, this may be the reason it does not install as the R would not be supported by the new firmware.

The firmware notice doesn't say anything about needing a specific camera to update the lens.  The update may not be relevant for the current camera, but the lens can't know what body you're going to attach it to later.  So it should be possible to update the lens regardless.

I don't have that lens, so I can't check it.

Greetings,

On Friday when I got 3 emails for my trinity I thought, I'm going to be upgrading FW tomorrow with my morning coffee.  Then I checked my R5 C and noticed it didn't support Focus Breathing Compensation.  All three of my lenses are running the latest FW prior to the update which adds this function.  You should still be able to upgrade the FW on a lens regardless of the body, but you don't need it unless you have a body that supports it.  Currently this is the R6 mkII.  On another body without FBC there is no performance changes or improvement when filming movies.

The upgrade process is similar to FW upgrade for a body.  Ensure the file you are using is compatible with the lens you are trying to upgrade as AtticusLake suggests.

.LFU or .AFU file in root directory of a card formatted in camera.  Lens attached to camera and mode set to Fv, Tv, Av, M or P.  Look at wrench Menu 4 for Upgrade.  Camera knows its for a lens based on file extension.  Upgrade > Select file > press Set button, then don't touch any buttons until the update completes.  Then OK and power off.  Remove card and power on.  Check displayed FW version for lens on menu.
