Hello, fellow photography enthusiast. I am having an issue with my RF 50mm 1.8 lens. So about a week ago I was walking outside, saw a flower I liked and decided to snap a pic. Camera was off so I flipped the switch on my EOS R8, with 50mm lens attached. The camera turned on but began rapidly clicking. I couldn't see any obstruction on the lens. The only thing attached was the lens hood ES-65B. So I turned off the camera and it continued clicking. The only way to get it to stop was to remove the battery. After I did that the lens stopped making the noise. I reinserted the battery, closed the hatch and turned on the camera and the lens was fine, it worked perfectly.
Cut to this afternoon about a week after the first incident... I was showing my son some of the cameras settings and when I turned on the R8, the 50mm lens began clicking again. I didn't panic this time because I figured when I removed the battery it would be good...Nope, upon reinstalling the battery the lens immediately began clicking again. I pull the battery again this time leaving the camera on, and after putting it back in it kept on clicking. I removed the lens then reattached it and it immediately began clicking. I took it off again and put on another lens and the RF 24-50mm, worked perfectly. Put back on the 50mm and still clicking. I turned off the camera removed the lens and put the lens cap on then reattached it to the camera and still clicking. Now I am getting scared because that 50mm is my good lens! I went to remove the lens cap, camera is still off, but instead of just removing it I decided to give it a slight pull outwards to hopefully engage the gears... Turned on the camera and it worked. No more clicking.
My question is what should I do? This issue is so sporadic I don't think I could replicate it for anyone. I have never dropped my camera or bashed the lens into anything. I am so careful with this thing because I freaking love it... that and I paid good money for it. Should I return the lens or send it in for an inspection? It isn't even a year old yet and I think this is a bit sad. This is my first real camera with my first real lens and this is how it is gonna be? Up until this point everything has functioned flawlessly.
By The Way: The clicking is very fast like a motor is spinning without catching a gear or something. Probably about 20-25 clicks a second, if I had to guess.

This sounds like call Canon on this one. Also lenses today don’t have gears to adjust focus. USM and STM lenses don’t use gears. Old Micro Motor and Arc Form Drive AF motor lenses had gears but they’ve been discontinued for years.
