Portrait photography lens recommendations for EOS Rebel T4i

I have a Canon Rebel T4I and a 75-300mm Canon Zoom Lens EF. I am just starting out on my photography journey, but I really like taking portraits and less zoomed in photos. What would be a good lens and how would I make sure it fits my camera?

Hi Steve:

Personally, I read the phrase "less zoomed in photos" as referring to the focal length rather than using an actual zoom lens per se. I realize you saw this differently and that is absolutely reasonable and valid.

Given the OP is just starting off, I thought having the opportunity to take a range of shots with different focal lengths to explore the camera and photography is a good idea, hence the zoom.
While the 18-55 (STM specifically) is an OK lens, the 18-135 STM is at least as good optically and has a much greater focal range, so I'll stick to that suggestion.  I suspect by now the poor OP is overwhelmed with suggestions and I just hope they get something that works for them! 😊

cheers, TREVOR

The mark of good photographer is less what they hold in their hand, it's more what they hold in their head;
"All the variety, all the charm, all the beauty of life is made up of light and shadow", Leo Tolstoy;
"Skill in photography is acquired by practice and not by purchase" Percy W. Harris

Steve the 18-55mm has 50mm included. Plus a lot of other FL. A prime is too limited in its veristically especially for a beginner.
