EOS R50: Do I need a macro lens?

Hello. I was recently gifted an EOS R50, coming from a Nikon user for years. I am doing some brand shoots, and am having trouble getting very close up video shots. I have been using the video recording movie close-up demos, but when I click the screen to zoom in either x5 or x10, and begin recording, it zooms out to normal again. I’m sure this is user error, as my last camera was 12 years old, and this is all so new to me. However, is it best to get a macro lens? If so, which one won’t break my wallet? Any attachments worth it, or is a lens my best bet?

Thanks 🙂

What lens do you have now?

That 5x/10x is a focusing aid the zoom can only be accomplished by twisting the zoom ring if you have a zoom lens.

I have the 18-45mm lens that came with it! I’d love to be able to shoot that close, and don’t think I can achieve it without the macro lens. But if I can avoid buying something so expensive, I’ll try anything first.

Close as what? Unless you are within a foot or so of the lens, you don't need a macro. Move the camera closer.

It does sound like you don't understand how to use the camera/lens combo. Perhaps a gander through the manual or some Youtube vids.

Greetings,

The R50 has a digital teleconverter feature for stills.

It has a digital zoom feature for movies.

At 18 mm the MFD of the RF18-45 is 7.87 in.  The MFD increases as you zoom.  Try using @kvbarkley's suggestion first.

Following this, you can use the digital zoom to increase magnification during video.  I might also recommend using a tripod.

I am trying to get extremely clear, close up videos, and when using the lens, I seem to have trouble getting it to focus that closely, hence the question about the micro lens. I think I’m just extremely unfamiliar right now with this camera.

Will for sure be going through YouTube today. My Nikon is over 12 years old, so I think I have no idea what I’m doing haha.

Awesome, thank you! Looking at these links now.
