EOS M50 lens recommendations for portrait photography

KailaM

Hello! So I have the 15-45mm lens and would like to buy lens to get into photography for example: Family portraits, newborn photography.
Im not sure what Lens would be good for such things I love to take pictures of my children and am good with editing but I feel like I need a lens that will potentially do better than the one I have!  Any suggestions please :)!

I think I interpret the OP's phrase "to get into photography" not on a professional basis but as a hobbyist.  If they were looking to work in the business, then that would be a different matter completely as, like you, I see the demands of professional work as much higher.  Given she has indicated a budget of no more than $600, it seems a long stretch to move into professional work with that limited amount.

First and foremost, I recommended the sub $500 package that Rick suggested.  I didn’t just suggest it, either.  I strongly recommended it.

As for the rest of my post, the OP indicated that she wanted “to get into photography” and used family portraits and baby photography as examples.  That sounds like a hobbyist wanting to learn more about photography than backyard cookouts.

The M50 is a great little pocket camera.  The R50 is really about the same size, but is far more capable and well within the OPs budget.  I feel further investment in the M-Series platform is not the best direction for someone looking to up their game a notch.

I think there is a grey area caused by the OP's definition of where she was going.  Obviously, I interpreted that as I indicated and that is why I questioned whether she needed a new lens at all, or even if so if the 32mm prime would suit her.
However, given your interpretation, I respect your opinion and would certainly concur with you, and say that if her intentions are more serious, then the R10 plus a suitable RF-S lens would be best.  I am not familiar with US pricing so I won't venture into the economics of it from down under! 😊

I actually have the same camera and the lens I use are EF-M 32mm 1.4 and sigma 56mm 1.4 for EF-M. Bought them on eBay. You can get them on Amazon also. But the M mount are discounted though, not really professional but it works well for me for my use.

KailaM,

I know you are probably not interested, I'm not, in al that banter back and forth but the bottom line, Kido is you have all you need to get yourself going. Add a good editor and start shooting. As you progress consider a new camera in the R series.
