My camera shipped with firmware 1.1.1 several years ago when I bought it (which I refreshed by downloading and running the update again today after having some issues with the lens). Every other lens I have tried with my camera the past few years works fine, but this lens, which I just purchased today, keeps giving me Err 01. Firmware 1.1.1 was supposed to fix this issue for both this lens and the 85mm macro, according to technical bulletins here. If I put the lens on my ancient 20D it functions fine, but I did not buy the lens to use it with that camera. Am I out of luck or is there another fix for it that I am not aware of?

If you bought the lens new, I suggest you contact canon. If you got New Old Stock, maybe the *lens* needs a firmware update.

Not sure...bought as new from B&H yesterday and arrived today. There's no date of manufacture that I can see on it.

New or used you would probably be best served by contacting them immediately, if you haven't already to let them know of the issue.

The firmware 1.1.1 is related to the 85mm f/1.8 and 100mm f/2 lenses. The 100mm f/2.8 L lens is different. It may be a defective lens or it may be an unidentified problem between the 90D and the L lens. It may be worth calling Canon and see what they say.

It’s already on its way back to B&H fora replacement. Hopefully the one they send me in exchange will work out. I was surprised by how poorly packed it was, with a single layer of bubble wrap around its box and stuffed inside of a larger box with no immobilization to keep it from tumbling around inside.

Good luck with the new lens. If you get the chance to post please let us know how the new lens worked out.

I think this was probably a good idea. Not that it matters but I have not heard of any issues with that lens on a 90D. It is a pretty good little lens and popular in fact.

Got the replacement lens today, and it exhibits the same exact behavior. It works fine on the 20D, but the 90D keeps giving me the communications err 01. No other lens when, used with the 90D, causes this issue, including the previous 100mm macro, without the IS and L stamp. I don't want to use it with the 20D, as that's not the camera I bought it for. Is my only option (versus returning it completely) now to send in the body to Canon, along with the lens, for them to check it? What's the typical turnaround for something like that, since I don't want to fall outside the return window for B&H if they cannot figure the issue out.

Since you seem to have identified that it is a lens/camera problem I suggest you give Canon a call at 1-800-OK-CANON.
