EF 17-40mm f/4L USM on EOS M50?

Hi I’m looking to buy a new lens for my camera? Does anyone have any idea if the Canom EF 17-40mm f/4L USM ultra wide angle lens will work with my eos m50? Would I just need it and an adapter or will it not work at all? If it won’t work at all what are some similar lens’ that would be compatible?

thanks

He wascasking if a 17-40 was going to work on his camera. Does he need a deep dive into the technicalities of lens moto systems?

I responded with a post that explained why that lens is not the best choice for his trip. Did you read that?

The 17- 40 is not the best solution for the reasons I mentioed. Plus it is optimised for FF, not an APS-C sensor. If he was using a D DSLR then maybe. But the fact is his 15-45 covers that range and more. But there are lenses he could use that are native to the M series body.

Sorry Trevor I missed some of the posts. I've been having some computer issues or forum issues I guess. The webpage doesn't load all of the way or correctly sometimes.

I agree. Since the interface changed there are posts the never seem to show and I get alerts for posts from ages ago.

Not to worry! 🙂

Since OP wants a wide angle lens. Does Canon have an EF-M equivalent of the EF-S 10-22mm or 10-18mm lenses. Or a similar focal range if an exact EF-M equivalent isn't available. I used to own the EF-S 10-22mm F/3.5-4.5 USM lens. I replaced the lens with the EF 16-35/ 2.8L III before I went FF. I ended up giving that lens along with my EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 USM lens to a friend who started his photography journey a few years ago. As an upgrade to the 18-55/ 3.5-5.6 kit lens that he got with his Rebel T7i.

I didn't know Canon went that wide with EF-M lenses. I already knew your choices with native EF-M lenses were quite limited.

It's always good to research when dealing with these questions.  I check frequently about that myself.  So, Canon native lenses for the EF-M mount are: 11-22, 15-45, 18-55, 22, 28 macro, 18-150, 32 and 55-200.  The size and range are designed precisely for the application that our OP is engaged with: i.e small, lenses in bulk, light, not horrifically fast (except for the three primes), great when you're on the move.

I try to use Canon's online lens and body museum. The Canon Museum doesn't have all the latest RF Mount lenses and bodies either. Even when it comes to older EF, EF-S, EF-M and camera bodies are missing.

An easy place to look is DPREVIEW.COM for their lens catalogue.  They have all the types and release dates of the various versions or just do a Google search for EF-M lenses

I currently have the EF-M 15-45mm F/3.6-6.3, an EF-EOS M adapter, and a 50mm f/1.8.
I just purchased an EF-M 55-200mm thanks to Trevor’s advice. I’m working on getting the EF-M 11-22mm.

I will be carrying a backpack, and I’m honestly not too worried about weight as I have hiked in Alaska and Peurto Rico with a pretty heavy backpack. I’m more worried about Image stabilization, as I’m sure my hands will be shaky after a hike in the elevation.

Do y’all recommend purchasing a tripod or just the lenses with image stabilization? I’m also a little worried about lighting/weather as Scotland is known for the fog/mist. Since none of my lenses are weatherproof, any recommendations on somewhat weatherproofing them (as I can’t drop 1,000-2,000$ on the L series lenses.
