Hi, student photographer with a Canon R6 mark ii. I’ve been researching lenses and the more I research the more confused / conflicting information I get 😬.
I can’t afford an RF lens just now. I’ve got a mount adaptor for my 24 -105 l is usm which is on my camera 24/7. I want to add a 70 - 200. What would folks suggest? I’ve looked at Canon and I’ve spent a long time looking at the sigma sport equivalent…help!

I would get the Canon for two reasons. Firstly it is absolutely assured of the maximum compatibility with the camera. Secondly it will have more resale value in the future should you be in a position to consider or need an update.
I actually still use my EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM with an EOS R6 Mark II as I need a lens that can take the extender and the RF ones cannot at this time.
Check the Canon supplemental information page to see if there are any particular camera features that require a specific lens. Generally the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM is compatible while there is no information for the Sigma and it might not support as many features as the Canon lens.

If you can't afford the Canon, which is the best 70-200mm made, than get the Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Lens. It is second best and half the price. Always keep your gear all Canon if possible but sometimes we just can't for one reason or another.

Thank you for your answers. My gut feel was to stick with Canon. Had a look at a few reviews which suggested it wasn’t the best lens out there which is why I was confused!

Well, I own that lens and I'm using it with my Canon R6 Mark I which probably is not has good as your Mark II.
Here are some of the pictures I took in a recent Karate Competition using that lens. If those pictures are not good, blame me the photographer. 😄

If you are interested in saving some expense you can check KEH or MPB for a used Canon lens within your budget.

"Had a look at a few reviews which suggested it wasn’t the best lens out there ..."
I would stop reading those reviews. 🤔
