Cannot register used Canon lens. "Serial number already registered"

I am trying to register a Canon lens which I purchased used some years ago, but the web site tells me "Serial number already registered." This is not surprising. I purchased the lens used from a camera rental company which was probably conscientious about registering its gear.

My question is: How I can register this lens and get it serviced? The lens is an older model, EF-S 17-55 1:2.8, which I bought used in 2013. I assume that Canon will service this lens if I can clear up the registration.
