What's the Best Wedding DSLR EF  Lens?

No single lens; for weddings you really need multiple:

  • Wide angle capable lens for photos of large groups of people (e.g. 24-70mm f/2.8).  May need wider if using a crop-sensor (APS-C) camera
  • Versatile zoom (70-200mm f/2.8 being very widely used)
  • Macro lens for detail shots

I have shot hundreds of weddings. The best lens is without any doubt is one of the ef 24-70mm f2.8L zooms. There has been several over the years. I don't care what other caveat you put on it or what conditions you add the ef 24-70mm f2.8L is king.

I also have an ef 16-35mm f2.8L  and ef 70-200mm f2.8L in my bag. But the 24-70 mil does 90% of the job. Not wanting to sound snobbish but if you are doing this as a business and not as a favor for a friend or family member you really need to be using a FF camera. Although I used several models of the 1.3 crop 1 series for years with  good success. All my second shooters did use a Rebel but they only did candids and side shots. The standard kit lens works well for that.
