Anyone have an EF 300mm f/4 L IS USM? How are you liking it?

I'm thinking about upgrading from my S55-210mm because honestly I use it at 210mm like 90% of the time and could probably be getting a much better image instead of variable zoom.

For which camera?

I think the 70-300 II would be a better bet, though with a little less IQ.

"...I use it at 210mm like 90% of the time"

As does almost everybody. That's why I would about 100% of the time rather have, which I do, the ef 300mm f4L

"...though with a little less IQ." That is an understatement as not only much better IQ everything else is better. Plus, I am no fan of a tel-con, the ef 300mm f4L works very well with the 1.4x which creates a 420mm f5.6 lens.

I used to own an EF 300mm f/4 L IS USM from about 2018-2022 and did like it. I first rented one and then decided to buy a previously owned one (from a Canon dealer)--I used it on a 6D mkII, a 90D and an EOS R. Since I am often shooting small things at fairly close range, the almost 5-foot minimum focus distance became bothersome. Also expect to have to correct chromatic aberration in post processing in certain situations as the older model lenses don't have quite as effective coating on them as the newer ones. And lastly, it does matter which camera you'll be using the lens on because certain features like high speed continuous shooting may not be available using this lens on a new camera model. Nevertheless, I don't remember experiencing that with the R though (2019). Canon provides lists regarding this so I recommend you do a search for that information. Or rent the lens to try it out before buying, like I did. Have fun.
