canon pixma tr8620 displaying error code 1240

My pixma tr8620 is giving error code 1240 - claiming the operations panel is closed - when in fact the panel is all the way open.

I've tried opening and closing everything multiple times, power cycling it, etc.  Same error.  Anyone else had this problem and have suggestions on how to fix it?

I wonder if it could be a problem with the sensor that detects when the panel is closed.

What Canon DOESN'T tell you is that the control operations panel has to STAY open while you print. If I leave it open, it prints. As I told their specialist a few minutes ago, this is like buying a car, but the engine won't run unless you leave the door open.
