I only occasionally print from the the rear tray (when printing on photo paper). Every time I do, it's a nightmare trying to make the printer switch back to the main cassette tray. It doesn't matter that I've carefully changed the 'Printer preferences' in Windows 10 (which brings up Canon's printer properties dialog).
This has been an issue ever since I've owned the printer. I've never asked for support because it eventually does it - although I don't know why or how it finally decides to do it.
By the way, I've even set up my 'Standard' settings to be from the main tray, using the "always print with these settings" checkbox.
Is there a method that makes this work?
